The son of a Berlin banker easy Jew whose family, who converted to Christianity, became an intellectual and artistic deemed that attend, including Hegel and his first music teacher, Zelter, he was noted very young for his precocity, especially by Goethe in which he plays. He became the most famous European composer of his time, particularly in England. In Leipzig in the 1840s, he befriended the composer Robert Schumann, who considers him the "Mozart of the nineteenth century".
