  • Zarah Hussain (b. ) trained at the Prince's School of Traditional Arts for an MA in Islamic art in Her practice has since evolved into a visual study of how spirituality, technology and art intersect. "I was the first artist to explore how algorithms could be used to animate Islamic pattern and my first work of this kind was commissioned by Cartwright Hall (Bradford, West Yorkshire) in It is now in the permanent collection of this museum. My most recent works include 'Invisible Threads', an animated light installation for the Barnaby festival in Macclesfield. This work looked into the hidden or 'invisible' history of migration in the town and 'Numina', a large-scale sculpture with a digitally animated 3D surface was commissioned by the Barbican in " 'Numina' combined designs found in the art of the Islamic world with state of the art projection technology.

    Zarah Hussain: Life and Geometry

    About

A new digital animation completes this small solo-show. As an MA graduate of the Islamic Art programme at the Prince's School for Traditional Arts in London, Zarah Hussain has spent many years perfecting the traditional techniques for creating mathematically precise, geometric art and then adapting them to produce unique works with a contemporary resonance across a range of disciplines.

Her latest work 'Numina' - currently on display in the foyer of the Barbican centre - combines Islamic-influenced design with contemporary digital arts, mapping animated geometric patterns onto a sculpture of tessellating pyramids.

Visible entirely from the pavement this exhibition 'Life and Geometry'  is a selection of smaller, hand-painted works including some 3D wall-hung tessellating pieces (below); and all available for sale.

Additionally Zarah has created a mesmerising new digital animation (see main image, top) especially for this show featuring her trademark: infinitely repeating patterns.

Everyone's welcome to our public al fresco preview on Friday 9 December, pm. Wrap up warm!
